In the movie Moonstruck, Cher, who plays Loretta, has a realism style of acting. In every movie that she is in, the viewer is mesmerized by her presence in the movie. In Moonstruck, she is a very strong, Italian woman who is trying to find happiness in her life. She loves her family very much but does have an independence about her. In one scene, after a night of lovemaking, Ronnie declares his love, Loretta, slaps him and shouts, “Snap out of it”! She says it with such conviction, I believe it is enhances the connection that these two characters had early in their relationship.
Nicholas Cage, who’s character Ronnie, is a down and out baker. Cage is a personality actor. In Moonstruck, he scoops Loretta in his arms and carries her to the bedroom. Although it would seem to be an aggressive act, he is able to achieve it with warmth to a certain degree. It was important to the movie, because it a stereotype of Italian’s passion for love. Whichever role he plays, whether it is a gentle sole or, as in the movie, Moonstruck. He is always a sexy, charismatic character. His personality comes through in every character he plays, which has given him a successful career and is popular with moviegoers.
Olympia Dukakis has a style of a character actress. Although she is good at her craft, she is a character actor, which is fairly basic character in her movies; important to the story but not extremely memorable. In Moonstruck, she plays the hurt but stable mother figure who tries to keep her family happy and together.
Cher is a very talented actress. She played a biker mom to a son with skull deformity. She plays a tough biker chick but also a nurturing, protective mother to her son. She insists that he is afforded opportunities all people are offered. As a result, he is a very warm, funny, well-adjusted teen.
